On 8th March 2019, in Dares-salaam Tanzania – For the fifth consecutive year, a global collaboration across stock exchanges around the world ‘Rang the Bell for Gender Equality’, to celebrate International Women’s Day 2019 (Friday, 8 March 2019).
Where as in Tanzania the event was a partnership between UN Global Compact Network Tanzania, UN Women, Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) and the Dares-salaam Stock Exchange,supported by UNDP at the Global level,the event was a partnership between IFC, Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative, UN Global Compact, UN Women, the World Federation of Exchanges and Women in ETFs, to raise awareness about the business case for women’s economic empowerment and the opportunities for the private sector to advance gender equality and sustainable development.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2019 was ‘Balance for better’. The theme focuses on ways in which the private sector can advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, particularly in the areas of social economic empowerment, protection systems, access to public services, and sustainable infrastructure.
The chief Guest,was Hon. Angellah Kairuki, Minister of State, Prime minister`s office , Investments and Empowerment. On her remarks she stated that the government is committed toward ensuring the opportunities of women and renew commitments to achieve gender equality and agenda 2030.
In addition to the bell ringing events, the bell ringing partner organizations applaud the work done to date, and encourage stock exchanges to take further action to improve gender equality in their markets. Recommended actions include signing the CEO Statement of Support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs); promoting gender equality in their workforce; introducing gender equality standards and supporting gender-equality themed investment products; providing guidance, training, mentoring, and education to market participants on gender equality and the role of gender diversity in business performance; and encouraging or requiring listed companies to publicly report on relevant gender metrics.
While giving Vote of thanks, Mr. Emmanuel Nnko , Global Compact Network – TZ coordinator thanked all invited guests and remarked that at Global Compact Network Tanzania believes empowering women is not only the right thing to do but the smart thing to do.
Ms.Natalie Boucly UNDP Representative Tanzania on her remarks she said promotion of gender equality & the empowerment of women are central to the mandate of UNDP and intrinsic to its human rights-based approach to development programming.
